Graduate Students
Students may undertake graduate study leading to the degree of MSc or PhD. It is a good idea to familiarize youself with the admission requirements, regulations, and procedures of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research. Degree of MSc (thesis-based)
Required courses depend on the area of research and the undergraduate background of the student, however, the MSc program normally consists of a minimum of 12 credit hours of course weight and a thesis. The minimum period of residence is two four-month terms of full-time attendance at the University of Alberta.
The time required to complete the MSc will vary with the individual candidate, however, a minimum of two years is normally required.

Degree of PhD
(thesis-based)
The PhD program normally consists of *12 and the preparation and defence of a thesis on an approval research topic. The minimum period of residence is two academic years of full-time attendance at the University of Alberta.
The time required to complete the PhD will vary according to the previous training of the applicant and the nature of the research undertaken, however, a minimum of two years is required.
