The required courses are provided in Part A of this Brochure; at the University of Alberta these courses are offered by the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Science and may be taken by students registered in a variety of degree programs. Please refer to University calendar for faculty-specific admission requirements.
II. Other Requirements
- Test of Spoken English (TSE): Applicants must meet a spoken English requirement. (See §13.3.2.)
- Letter of Intent: Applicants must submit a letter with their application for admission stating their career goals, knowledge of the profession, related experience, and reasons for seeking admission to the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Note: Applicants who have sequential high school background courses in Chemistry, English, Mathematics, and Biology will best be prepared to succeed in the Pre-pharmacy program.
III. Selection process
- The Admissions Committee has the responsibility of selecting from among the applicants those individuals who have demonstrated promise to successfully complete the program and gain licensure as pharmacists. Pharmacy has a quota of 130 places and admission is competitive. The number of applicants exceeds the number of available spaces and therefore not all qualified candidates will be offered admission.
- Applicants are ranked primarily on academic achievement in the prerequisite courses. Other factors considered in ranking include overall academic achievement (emphasizing recent academic performance), a demonstrated ability to perform well in a consecutive Fall/Winter session of full-time study (preferably *30 units), and a Letter of Intent. The Letter of Intent provides an opportunity for the applicant to convey career goals, knowledge of the profession, employment or volunteer experience, and other personal attributes that might be relevant for consideration by the Admissions Committee. You will find further detail regarding the Letter of Intent below.
- Students are encouraged to have all of their course entrance requirements in place by the end of June. This is when the decisions regarding admission are made. Admission cannot be offered to students who are lacking necessary prerequisite courses.
15.12.2 Aboriginal Applicants
The Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences may provide one position to an Aboriginal applicant, over the regular quota of 130 students. Students who are of Aboriginal ancestry within the meaning of the Constitution Act, 1982, Section 35(2) will be considered in this category (§14.1). Proof of Aboriginal status, to be provided as part of the application for admission, is required for consideration of this position (§14.1.2.(2).
Candidates will be subject to admission as outlined in §15.12.1, and to approval by the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Admissions Committee. If there are no qualified Aboriginal students in any given year, this position will not be allocated to other applicants.
Aboriginal student applicants should contact the Coordinator, Native Health Care Careers, for individual counseling and career planning. See also §14.1.
Selection Factors
The admissions Committee consists of two Pharmacy academic staff members, a practicing pharmacist appointed by the Alberta College of Pharmacists, a representative from the Office of the Registrar, a lay observer from the University Senate, and the Faculty’s Director of Undergraduate Affairs for the Faculty as Chairman. The Committee meets late in June and decisions are communicated immediately thereafter by the Faculty office.
There is considerable demand for the Pharmacy program. Selection from the applicant pool is on a competitive basis and thus not all qualified candidates will be offered admission. The Admissions Committee has the responsibility of selecting from among the applicants those individuals who have demonstrated sufficient ability to successfully complete the program and gain licensure as pharmacists.
Selection will be based primarily on the students’ academic achievement in the required courses listed above as well as the students’ overall academic record and performance. Employment or volunteer experience in a related field will also be considered. The letter of intent is reviewed to ensure that the applicant has a realistic view of the program and profession and to evaluate any additional information relevant to admission.
**Note: Reference letters are not an entrance requirement. If you wish to submit a letter of intent, you may send letters to Student Services.
Program Details
The BSc (Pharm) degree is a requirement for licensure to practice Pharmacy. The five-year program consists of a one-year pre-professional requirement, usually in a Science program, followed by four years in the Faculty of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences.
High School Students
For those students completing Grade 12, please register in the Faculty of Science for Pharmacy pre-professional courses. For students completing Grade 11, the courses required for the pre-Pharmacy program in the Faculty of Science entrance (at least 70%) include: English 30, Mathematics 30, two of Biology 30, Chemistry 30, Mathematics 31 or Physics 30 as well as another 30-level course. This makes five courses. Other recommended high school courses include courses in computing, business, accounting and biological sciences. Applicants who have sequential high school background courses in Chemistry, English, Mathematics and Biology will be better prepared to succeed in the pre-Pharmacy program.
How do I know if my courses are transferable?
If you are a student not attending the U of A, you will need to speak with the Registrar's Office to find out if your classes are in fact transferable to ours. If you are student attending a university or college in Alberta, there is an Alberta Transfer Equivalency Guide available at most Registrars' Offices in Alberta.
In taking these prerequisites at another post-secondary institution, it is your responsibility as the student, to make sure they are transferable to the University of Alberta.
Our office does not keep a record of transferable courses from outside Alberta.
Ontario students: OAC courses are not transferable.
