University of Alberta

Research and Researchers

Research has always been the strength of the Faculty. Our Faculty of Pharmacy is one of the largest Faculty of Pharmacy in Canada and one of the most diverse on campus in terms of the research interests of its academic staff. This diversity has resulted in numerous collaborations among Principal Investigators as they discover common themes and approaches within their research programs. The Faculty currently has over 39 professors, 31 adjunct professors and 9 professors emeritus, along with a graduate student population of nearly 60 students.

The Faculty's researchers attract approximately $2 million annually in external research grants and contracts. The Faculty has also excelled in transferring its research technology to the marketplace. Many of the University's spin-off companies originated in the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Research Units

Drug Development and Innovation Centre (DDIC)
The DDIC (http://www.ddic.ca/), established in 2009, provides infrastructure and
expertise to its industry partners. It develops market-ready therapeutic products,
effectively manages product life cycles, and gains a competitive edge through unique
and innovative solutions. The centre closes the gap between basic sciences and clinical
research. The DDIC’s approach helped an interdisciplinary team comprised of DDIC,
Agriculture and Rural Development, Government of Alberta and the CARE program win
the Premier’s Award of Excellence (Gold Award), and the Canada Award of Excellence
for their translational research.

Noujaim Institute
Dr. Antoine Noujaim’s $1,000,000 donation to the Faculty allowed the creation of the
Institute in 1994. The Institute’s goal is to advance pharmaceutical sciences research,
particularly in the area of cancer. The funds remaining from the original donation were
moved into an endowment in 2011 and the Faculty is moving toward a new strategic
vision and appointment of a new director by 2012.
